One of the most fun sequences to bring to screen was the reconstruction of the day of Otzi's death. Amazingly, although he died five millennia ago, today’s scientists can trace exactly where the Iceman was in the last 12 hours before his death... The clue--traces of hophornbeam pollen found in his colon... pollen that comes from only one valley nearby. We planned an animation sequence that would demonstrate not just how Otzi ingested the pollen, but when.... for the precise location in the colon demonstrated exactly when he had passed through the valley... We storyboarded the sequence... shot the forest... superimposed the animated "pollen"... And finally, the entire journey of this microscopic clue emerged. |

To create the shot of the Iceman ingesting the pollen, we shot an extreme close up of the face of the iceman walking through the forest for the
storyboard. In post-production, we filmed some real hop-hornbeam pollen, enlarged it and rendered it in 3D. Then it was superimposed onto the frame with a move which created the effect that it was entering Otzi's nose. |

To create the killing of the iceman with the arrow, we built a cable system to which we attached the camera, in order to make it fly through the air. In post-production, the arrow was filmed and rendered in 3D. Then it was superimposed onto the frame and the cable system was removed, frame by frame, to give the final look. |

To create the sequence of the ice mummies around the world, we took aerial shots of The Arctic, The Andes and The Alps. In post-production, we used a digitised world that gave the feeling of flying at a certain height. To make it even more realistic, we added sped up shots of real clouds, to create the feeling of flying from one part of the world to another. |
