making of
King Tut Unwrapped has been a labor of love for Brando Quilici. We spent two and a half years chronicling Dr. Hawass’s epic scientific investigation, shooting in numerous locations throughout Egypt, across Europe and Morocco.

Our aim was to bring Dr. Hawass’ exciting new findings to life, creating the ultimate show on King Tut and his family with epic, iconic images of Egypt, Tut and his treasures.

ZAHI CAM

While it’s crucial to have rich, beautiful imagery, it’s not enough. We wanted to plunge the audience into the heart of the archaeological and scientific investigation, to feel that they are there—right in the center of the action. The viewer is not just an observer but a participant—thrust into dark tombs, desert excavations, the dusty back rooms of the Cairo Museum.
We therefore came up with the idea to mount cameras on our lead characters, Dr. Zahi and his team,—to recreate the energy and the excitement that our characters themselves experience as they take samples from the mummy of Tutankhamun, explore a forgotten tomb for the first time, or dig up a 3500 year old skeleton from the desert sands.

How does the Zahicam work? Watch the video clip…

RECREATIONS

Recreations are a great way to bring Ancient Egypt to life for the audience. We shot on location at Atlas Studio in Ourzazate, Morocco. One of the most difficult tasks fell to our set designer, Andrew Sanders, in recreating Tut’s world, without the luxury of a big Hollywood budget. Below are some of his initial storyboards, and the end result on location.

GRAPHICS

Hello Charlie created some beautiful CGI elements for us which help bring to life abandoned tombs and deserted temples

Perhaps one the most difficult concepts to convey was the complicated geneaology of Tutankhamun and the pharaoh of the late 18th Dynasty, This beautiful family tree graphic, created by hello Charlie really helped clarify and highlight the different branches of King Tut’s family.

FAMILY TREE AMENDS

The only positively identified bodies they have are Tut himself... and his Great Great Grandparents
Pull out to show other possible names floating above the fixed family tree.

Akenhaten as possible candidate as Tut's father. Name is floating above the family tree.
The name 'Akenhaten' falls back in 3D space to fit in to the family tree. The gold river flows through to fix his name within Tut's lineage
