Program 1 ALONG THE MIGHTY PEAKS Born of fire and ice, the Andes are the product of millions of years of fitful geological unrest. This grand and longest mountain chain of our planet is, in many ways, as dynamic today as it was millennia ago, when the headlong collision of tectonic plates first cracked the spine of South America. This episode focuses on the sheer power of the mountains, their volcanoes and their frequent earthquakes. Our guides are the earth scientists and campesinos who are at home amid these violent peaks. Countless thousands now live in the shadow of disaster, yet the death and destruction they have suffered inevitably gives way to triumph. |

Program 2 LIFE IN THE SKY The Andes harbors secrets stolen away in their precipitous vaults. Mysteries of the ancients, of mystics and of those who have learned to tap its precious bounty. The Andes are no less sacred to their people today as they were for the Inca 500 years ago. With the world famous High Altitude archaeologist Johan Reinhard, we will comb the Pichu Pichu high peak for human sacrifices, offered up by the Inca to appease the mountain gods. And we will reclaim two mummies from their summit grave. In the mummies gaze, the mystery lingers: who were these ancient people who slew the innocents? |

Program 3 THE UNTAMED MOUNTAINS This episode celebrates the vibrant wildlife community that thrives in the Cordilleras' embrace. From the animals that flourish in the Andes shadow, to those that swim its waters and crown its summits. This above all, is what set this range apart from any other on earth. Crowded into extraordinary proximity are searing deserts, bountiful seas and soaring snow peaks. Each is its own ecosystem, rich with plants and creatures unique to the world. Yet all life here is united by the harsh conditions that rule. The dramas that unfold amid these slopes are born of the fierce competition for the Andes' resources. |
