We will follow the story of people who challenge themselves against the sands, in four great tales of survival. Four stories of men versus nature in some of the most punishing regions on earth: an epic camel caravan; a brutal marathon – across the Sahara; a no-holds-barred survival training course; and an intrepid rescue team saving lives in the high deserts.

	Program 3 THE LIVING SANDS From the Namib to the Sahara, fully one third of the earth’s surface is covered in desert and arid lands. These are harsh, forbidding realms, racked by sun and wind; stripped of moisture and fried by heat. It would seem as if nothing could possibly survive here. Yet, amazingly, many creatures do. How do animals manage to eek out a life in this barren, unforgiving place with temperatures that soar up to 140 degrees, and rainfall limited to only one or two inches a year? We will plunge into this bitter wasteland to find out how a place of death is, in fact, remarkably alive.
